Job Description

Role Objective

The VAT Specialist will be responsible for assisting the team to develop internal VAT compliance procedures, implementation of IT software and VAT education. Once VAT is introduced, the VAT Specialist will handle VAT compliance matters of a portfolio of taxpayers and provide necessary support to the Head of Tax Compliance and the Managing Director of Tax for the development and administration of the VAT regime.

Key Responsibilities

Prior to the introduction of VAT

  • Review, update and finalize VAT compliance processes. Work with the Head of Tax Compliance to ensure all processes work alongside existing corporate tax processes.
  • Assist the IT and Finance departments with the introduction of VAT, to ensure that the (and its affiliates) processes and IT software are ready for the introduction of VAT. Provide education and guidance to the and its affiliates Finance teams.
  • Work with the General Tax Authority’s VAT department, in coordination with the Tax Department, to ensure that the VAT processes are properly implemented in the GTAs VAT IT tool.
  • Prepare and present VAT educational sessions to firms.
  • Any other tasks related to the rolling out/implementation of VAT, as directed by the Head of Tax compliance and/or the Managing Director of Tax.

Upon the introduction of VAT

  • Handle and monitor all VAT compliance processes including; monitoring firms who are required to register for VAT, forced VAT registrations and ensure that these are administered in an efficient and fair manner.
  • Respond to VAT queries from taxpayers in a timely manner.
  • Work with GTA’s VAT Department, in coordination with the Tax Department, on identifying and resolving, in an efficient and timely manner, issues raised in relation to the operation of the regime (VAT technical questions/issues, process/IT-related issues, etc.).
  • Review VAT registrations, returns, carry out risk assessments and enquiries to ensure that returns comply with VAT Regulations and Rules.
  • Issue VAT penalties in a timely manner and deal with all penalty waiver requests and appeals.
  • Provide advice and recommend responses on advance rulings requests.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports for the Managing Director – Tax for his review.
  • Assist in preparing monthly internal management reports, including to the EXCO and CEO and ensure all VAT records are properly maintained.
  • Assist in updating the VAT Manual guidance material and completing any new guidance or policy added in a timely manner, under the supervision and control of the Head of Tax Compliance and the Managing Director – Tax.
  • Support the Head of Tax Compliance and the Managing Director – Tax in all areas of the operation of the VAT regime as required.
  • Assist the team with relevant VAT projects.

  • Good IT and spreadsheet skills
  • Maintains high standards of honesty and trustworthiness.
  • Identifies the causes of problems and proposes realistic and practical solutions to address them.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting other tax related discipline.
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in either a VAT compliance or advisory role or with a government tax department/Revenue authority.

It will be a renewable contract position for 1 Year.
