Qatar is hosting the next FIFA World Cup from November 17 through December 21, 2022. VCUarts Qatar, along with the other international branch campuses based in Education City, is adjusting its 2022/2023 academic calendar so that local venues, facilities, and grounds can be utilized to host World Cup events, activities, and celebrations. Thus, classes for the Fall 2022 semester will begin on July 31, 2022, with 9-month faculty required to be in Qatar by July 25, 2022. VCUarts Qatar will resume its standard academic calendar for 2023/2024, with classes starting in late August 2023. Additional details will be shared with candidates during the application process.
VCUarts Qatar invites engaged, charismatic, and collaboration-minded visionaries to serve as Chair of the Department of Interior Design and lead one of the few CIDA accredited programs outside USA and Canada. The Chair will be expected to facilitate, through innovative and contextualized teaching and research, an active engagement in integrating technical and philosophical design inquiries in order to develop a greater capacity for creativity, relevance and impact. The Chair must possess a thorough knowledge of interior design education and its emerging pedagogic and research/creative practice trends. Leaders who have a strong academic background with significant university experience are preferred. Candidates with international academic experience and/or experience with international students are encouraged to apply.
The Chair will serve as an advocate for the Department of Interior Design within the school and university and to its various external constituencies, and will work collaboratively with the chairs of other departments in supporting the strategic goals of VCUarts Qatar. The Chair will lead an academic program that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Interior Design equivalent to the curriculum offered to students pursuing the corresponding degree program at the main campus of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. The Chair will be expected to collaborate closely with the VCUarts Department of Interior Design to facilitate curricular development and connections between the two programs.
The Chair of the VCUarts Qatar Department of Interior Design will nurture a program that intersects art, architecture, design and behavioral sciences. Similarly, the Chair will promote a studio/classroom environment that is conducive to contemporary design practices and underscores innovative teaching methods, techniques and practices while giving consideration to the local and regional contextual needs and aspirations. The Chair will implement program goals, facilitate multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches to professional education, initiate new directions and support for research activity, professional development and curriculum development, oversee adherence to accreditation guidelines, and increase the programs national and international involvement and visibility.
Similarly, the Chair will further demonstrate leadership by fostering collaborative partnerships, curriculum, and pedagogic and research across Education City with university partners and Qatar Foundation Centers, as well as VCUarts and the broader VCU campus, to achieve the mission of Qatar Foundation to create a center of excellence in education and research that will help transform Qatar into a knowledge-based society.
The Chair will teach courses consistent with his/her area of expertise and will report directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and will supervise six faculty.
