Job Summary

Leads design, implementation, operation, support, deployment and distribution of critical and complex audio, data, video, and converged communications services. Advises users on available services and assists in determining best fit. Identifies resources needed, develops schedules, and ensures timely completion of requests.

The Broadcast Engineer, reports to the Manager of Broadcast Engineering, with limited and/or no supervision to design, implementation, operation, support, deployment of critical and complex broadcast and post production systems from television studios, production control rooms, audio control rooms to news production systems, including; Day to day duties performing user support, maintaining a wide range of specialist broadcast equipment, routine system checks, fault finding and resolution, logging and maintaining service tickets and ensuring that existing service levels is maintained or improved. Contributes and ensures full compliance with operational standards, procedures, best practices and performs other related duties as assigned.

Specific Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Evaluation of new and emerging technologies.
  • Anticipates impact of growth and changes in operations, and recommends design and/or process changes.

Design & Implementation

  • Provides solutions by pursuing & resolving interoperability issues with users and appropriate vendors.


  • Investigates new technologies and strategies for broadcast and production systems deployment and integration into the broadcast and production infrastructure.
  • Writes requirement documents for evaluation of new hardware/software.
  • Coordinates vendor product demonstrations, setup evaluation criteria and development recommendations for purchase of new hardware/software.
  • Develops relationships with vendors.
  • Partners with internal/external staff to develop requirements for new services and applications to meet the needs of the campus community.
  • Leads in the maintenance and integrity of university broadcast and production systems.
  • Executes data backup and recovery routines on a specified schedule or as requested.
  • Maintains awareness of evolving broadcast and production technologies through professional publications, outside contacts, and ongoing professional development.


  • Performs complex day-to-day operational activities for maintaining the broadcast and production systems including patching, backups/restorations, configuration, updating and documentation.
  • Coordinates and performs installation, maintenance and repair of broadcast and production systems including patching, backups/restorations, configuration, updating and documentation.
  • Leads troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and corrective actions to ensure the highest availability and overall integrity of NU-Q’s broadcast and production systems.


  • Provides 2nd and 3rd tier support.
  • Consults with Production and Digital Media Services Operations and users to diagnose and resolve problems in a timely fashion while stressing user service.
  • Analyzes and isolates root cause.
  • Provides solutions to user questions and other queries such as connectivity problems, performance issues, functionality, outages etc.
  • Utilizes available tools to monitor performance and respond appropriately.


  • Manages projects ensuring timelines and deliverables are met and meet expectations.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree in a major of broadcast engineering or communications engineering or electrical engineering.
  • 5 years Broadcast Engineering experience within a Broadcast/Post Production environment.
  • Excellent knowledge of Evertz Routers, EVS, ENPS, EMC Isilon, Grass Valley Ignite, Chyron graphics systems, Windows server technology, DHCP, Active Directory and DNS.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Fluency in English language.
  • Advanced knowledge of Broadcast system enterprise architecture.
  • Advanced knowledge of Network technologies to enable analyzing Broadcast IT and Audio Video system problems under pressure.
  • Advanced knowledge of current Broadcast Video standards including 3G/HD-SDI theories, installation methods, measurements and troubleshooting.
  • Advanced knowledge of Broadcast Audio standards including Dolby digital, THX and embedded SDI theories, installation methods, measurements and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to work closely with students and student employees.
  • Ability to use both PC and Mac applications.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to lift/move equipment up to 20Kg (approx. 44.0 Lbs.)

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Successful completion of a master’s degree in an accredited college or university in a major such as broadcast engineering, communications engineering, and electrical engineering.
  • 7+ years broadcast engineering experience within a broadcast/post production environment.
  • Experience working within an educational environment.

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • Knowledge of Middle East culture and customs.
  • Speaking a second language is a plus.
