About the job

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Qatar invites applications for CMU teaching-track faculty positions, in Computer Science, in Computational Biology, and in Human-Computer Interaction to begin in Fall 2024. All appointments are at the level of assistant professor, but applicants with significant experience in teaching and major impact in CS research and education may also be considered for a higher level.

We are seeking primarily faculty in the areas of AI/Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Human-Computer Interaction, and Computational Biology, but candidates in other areas of Computer Science will also be considered. The positions focus on teaching, with a specific interest in courses related to these domains. At the same time, they provide the flexibility and opportunity to engage in various other academic activities, including research, student advising, outreach, curriculum development, and experimentation with new teaching methodologies. Funds are available from CMU and from national agencies to support research agendas and candidates are encouraged to contribute with high-quality research projects.

The positions are based at Carnegie Mellon’s branch campus in Doha, Qatar (CMUQ) and offer competitive salary, startup research funding, attractive professional development support, excellent international health care coverage, and allowances for housing, travel, and schooling, if eligible, alongside other benefits. Successful candidates will be encouraged to spend one semester on the main campus in Pittsburgh at the beginning of their appointment. Subsequent visits to the main campus for collaborations are incentivized and supported.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar operates in concert with several other American and European branch campuses under the umbrella of Qatar Foundation’s Education City (https://www.qf.org.qa/education/education-city). The branch campus closely follows the admissions requirements and English language curriculum of the home campus in Pittsburgh, which awards all degrees. The several thousand students in Education City are a broad mix of nationalities, but primarily from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. CMUQ’s faculty is a mix of professionals hired specifically to the campus and seconded by faculty from the main campus. CMUQ’s primary focus is undergraduate education in Business Administration, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, and Information Systems.

Carnegie Mellon University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual, cultural, and social dimensions. Carnegie Mellon welcomes faculty applicants who will contribute to this diversity through their research, teaching, and service, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, individuals with disabilities, and others who would contribute in different ways.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Computational Biology, or a related field, and a background of demonstrated academic excellence. The positions expect strong interest and commitment to teaching, mentoring, and supporting students at the undergraduate level. They involve teaching classes in one or more of the following areas of computer science: algorithms and data structures, AI and machine learning, NLP, human-computer interaction, and computational biology. Besides being excellent educators, candidates are expected to contribute to the Computer Science department through activities such as research, outreach, advising, or curriculum development.
